This section is dedicated to the personalities and landmarks of the city that are closely intertwined with the Kamianets history of “Shchedryk” (Carol of the Bells).
Kamianets-Podilskyi shares a unique connection to the history of “Shchedryk”. The composer of the piece, Mykola Leontovych, studied in our city from 1892 to 1899 at the Podillia Theological Seminary. It was here that he mastered music theory and choral singing, learned to play various musical instruments, and began arranging folk melodies. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Republican Capella, which introduced “Shchedryk” to the world, was fully formed right here in Kamianets-Podilskyi. Under the baton of conductor Oleksandr Koshyts, the choristers mastered the piece during their rehearsals in Kamianets. From Kamianets-Podilskyi, on March 24, 1919, this choral masterpiece took flight on its triumphant global journey. It is fair to say that “Shchedryk” truly has Kamianets notes and wings.
