“Shchedryk” is not just a song, but a true cultural code that defies a single definition. Over its more than century-old history, this seemingly simple, archaic melody undertook an incredible global journey and transformed into a planetary phenomenon. Today, neither in Ukraine nor in any corner of the globe is it possible to imagine the Christmas and New Year holidays without “Shchedryk”, its cozy chords, and the world-famous “Carol of the Bells”. It resonates everywhere: from peaceful churches and grand concert halls to movies, radio broadcasts, and even children’s toys. “Shchedryk” dissolves borders, inspires creativity, and stands as a unique Ukrainian treasure that we have gifted to the world to unite all nations.

Kamianets-Podilskyi holds a special connection and played a pivotal role in the history of “Shchedryk”. It was here, in the Podillia Theological Seminary, that the composition’s author, Mykola Leontovych, studied from 1892 to 1899, mastering music theory, choral singing, and musical instruments. Here, in the Podillia region, he also began arranging folk melodies. It was in Kamianets-Podilskyi that the Ukrainian Republican Capella was formed to introduce “Shchedryk” to the entire world. During these rehearsals in Kamianets, the singers under the baton of conductor Oleksandr Koshyts mastered the piece, and it was from here, on March 24, 1919, that the composer’s choral masterpiece took flight on its triumphant journey across the globe. It is fair to say that “Shchedryk” has Kamianets notes and wings. Today, the residents of Kamianets actively research, honor, and popularize this history, and the city has already launched the project “KAMIANETS NOTES AND WINGS OF SHCHEDRYK”.
